Removing a Fallen Gum Tree During Cyclone Alfred

Emergency Tree Removal During Cyclone Alfred: Superior Tree Service Responds at Wellington Point

When disaster strikes, every second counts—and the ability to respond quickly, safely, and professionally can make all the difference. This was the case at Wellington Point, where the team from Superior Tree Service responded to a high-risk emergency after a massive gum tree collapsed onto a residential home during the height of Cyclone Alfred.

With wind gusts reaching up to 150 km/h, the situation was extremely hazardous. The fallen tree had caused significant structural damage to the home, rendering parts of it unstable and unsafe to access. Yet, despite the chaos and danger, our team stepped up to deliver a highly complex, technical, and lifesaving operation, executed with care, skill, and absolute professionalism.

Responding in the Eye of the Storm

The emergency call came in during some of the worst weather Queensland has seen in recent years. Cyclone Alfred had torn through the region with ferocious winds, bringing down powerlines, trees, and anything in its path. At Wellington Point, a large mature gum tree, already weakened by previous storms, gave way under the relentless wind pressure and came crashing down onto the roof of a family home.

Upon arrival, our team assessed the damage and quickly determined that traditional methods of tree removal would be unsafe under the circumstances. The roof was unstable, the structure beneath it compromised, and the ongoing cyclone conditions presented an ever-changing and highly dangerous working environment.

Aerial Tree Access with Crane Support

To tackle this emergency, we worked in close collaboration with National Crane Hire, who provided a suitable crane and a skilled operator for the task. With machinery access to the house limited and the roof deemed unsafe to climb using standard methods, we made the decision to use a crane to lower our arborist directly onto the structure.

Secured to the crane’s hook via a full-body harness, our highly trained climbing arborist was safely and carefully guided down onto the damaged roof—an operation requiring extreme precision and calm under pressure. From this precarious position, he began the meticulous process of systematically cutting and securing each limb of the fallen gum tree.

Precision Tree Cutting Under Pressure

Each cut made during this emergency job had to be done with full consideration of multiple risks: the integrity of the roof, the weight and balance of the limbs, and the potential for sudden shifts due to the still-powerful winds.

Our arborist used a chainsaw to section the tree piece by piece, carefully rigging and communicating with the crane operator to ensure that each limb could be lifted cleanly away from the structure without causing further damage or putting anyone in harm’s way.

This process required flawless coordination between the ground crew, crane operator, and climber. With winds buffeting the crane, visibility at times reduced, and structural risks beneath the arborist’s feet, it was a job that demanded unshakable focus, exceptional skill, and unwavering teamwork.

Tree Debris Management and Final Outcome

As the limbs were removed from the roof, they were lowered into the backyard and safely stacked for later processing. Due to ongoing cyclone conditions, full processing and chipping of the material were deferred until conditions stabilised. Priority in this situation was the safety of everyone on-site and the prevention of further structural compromise.
